The Vintage
In a retrospective tasting of various vintages lately 2015 came to be called the year of the grip in the Maule wines but here from Maipo it is more restrained. It was warmer than most years but healthy and dry.

the Vineyard :

Ancient riverbed flows beneath the vineyard. Rio Clarillo once had two tributaries that have since dried up. Soil studies with Pedro Parra revealed the river´s path and the Franc from these bending sections of the old river are especially interesting.  Altitude allows a freshness that works very well with this variety when it is not overly extracted allowing elegant and distinct flavour profile of blue fruit and minty leaf.

 

the Making:

  • Naturally fermented with native yeasts
  • Open top fermenters. Caps were punched down by hand.
  • Aged in barrels over two winters— barrels third use.
  • Yeasts native (we add wine from previous vintage to a pie de cuba)
  • No temp control (besides opening closing windows) open tank, no nada
  • Pinch of sulfites after malolactic that finishes before winter begins.

Crianza:

  • Aged in barrels over two winters— barrels third use from cooperages Sylvain, Berger, Nadalie special softer Noisette toast.

 

¿Cuántos lotes hay de este vino?

Lot made from a parcel in Pirque of pure Cab Franc. We do not believe in monkey business nor tweaking with other bits we might have in bodega from other parcels. We blend the various barrels, racked separately throughout crianza, 3 or 4 days before bottling.

When we find a barrel that talks too loud or marks the blend too much we put it aside for a second wine made solera style called: Perverso.

The 7oth wine we have bottled produced since 2001 it is marked Lot # 7o

Pirque Vineyard Maipo Valley Cab Franc 2013  – Lot # 60 – 93 Pts
There is also a Cabernet Franc from Pirque labeled as 2014 Pirque Vineyard, which was cropped from vines planted in the 1980s and grown at 700 meters altitude. They always provide amusing descriptions of their wines, and this one was described as “Elegant blue-fruited gent with muscles inside a well cut jacket.” The usual modus operandi was followed once more, with native fermentation in open top fermenters with punching down by hand and two winters in used barrels. It has herbal aromas, spicier notes and especially more character than the majority of Cabernet Sauvignon from Maipo. It is also very spicy in the palate with some “morrón” pepper nuances. Very tasty, almost salty. 2,464 bottles were filled in November 2015. Drink 2017-2o27 Luis Gutierrez

The 2013 Lot #50 Cabernet Franc is sourced, like all the lots of Cabernet Franc, from the Pirque Vineyard in Maipo, and in this vintage the vineyard is shown on the label (well, it’s actually painted on the bottle!). It has that note of freshness I find in some of the best high-altitude vineyards, with some blue fruit aromas, something minty, leafy, herbal, balsamic, very fresh and a little wild. This is a vineyard at some 700 meters altitude. The palate is also very fresh, medium-bodied with very fine tannins, a fine texture and is very elegant. I tasted the 2009 for context and aging potential, and even when they used more oak at the time, the wine is aging very nicely, with some rusticity. 5,513 bottles were filled. Este Cabernet Franc viene del Alto Maipo, de la zona de Pirque, a unos 700 mts sobre el nivel del mar, una zona privilegiado para esta cepa que no ha sido tan explotada en el Maipo. En este caso, es un Franc lleno de aromas herbales rico en frescor, pero también de una extraña complejidad terrosa, con aromas de tierra húmeda (suena raro, pero en fin, la imaginación da para mucho…) Este es un vino que tiene que probar. – Patricio Tapia

This wine has a clean aroma of raspberry leaf and red fruits along with balsamic notes and great purity. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh, clean and pure, with a bitter note that lingers in your mouth. Drink now-2017.

Lot 28 Cabernet Franc 2010 –  92 pts (Best Cab Franc from Chile)
Lot 28 comes from 25+- year-old vines at 800 meters altitude and spends two winters in oak. It has a very convincing, fresh, expressive bouquet with pure brambly, briary black fruit and freshly tilled soil. The palate is medium- bodied with crisp black cherry and blueberry fruit on the entry. The tannins are fine and edgy, while the finish is beautifully composed and contains Margaux- like femininity. This is extremely well-crafted Cabernet Franc, surfeit with personality. Drink now-2017.

Bright ruby. Intense, spice-accented aromas of cherry, redcurrant and violet, with smoke and mineral topnotes. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering energetic red fruit flavors that take on weight with air. Yesterday we sat down to blend Maipo Cabs. 

Just like many sessions we have had over the years tasting barrel by barrel. 2018 is a crackerjack of a vintage to be sure. We were happy with the wines and like we do we pulled a couple of barrels back for our solera programme because we thought they spoke to loud instead of harmonising with the rest. As the session came to a close Alvaro asked what Lot number these wines would be? “Lot 100 & Lot 101” I said. 

There was a pause as we all realised it was a bit of a milestone.

It has been a long and winding road since 2003 when we began in the Garage. We owe a great deal of thanks to so many of you out there for putting up with us all these years. You allowed us to do what we do they way we like to do it through good times and bad—including an earthquake, bushfires, and this latest invisible mucker. 

These lots will not be on the shelf for a long time, but perhaps mentioning them here might give us all pause to think of sharing better times ahead when we can raise a centenary lot of GWCo! #gwcowinery #gwcoharvest2018 #movichile #chileanwines
