In a Nutshell:

  • 1 of 11 wines we make from single parcels
  • Grower / partner Solar family
  • Alluvial like the Bagual Vineyard where the Carignan blend hails from but a separate parcel further from the banks of the Perquilauquen river. This vineyard has two deep esteros on each side that lend it terrific drainage.
  • Near the banks of the Perquilauquen river. A river that (very unusual for Chile!) flows from the Coastal Mountains East towards the Andes passing through Caliboro bringing granitic silt with it. East of Caliboro it turns North and then West joining the Loncomilla and then the Maule river and on out to the Pacific.
  • The Perquilauquen is wide through this section like a narrow lake and this water body lends the fruit cooler conditions than neighboring Melosal or Loncomilla.

  • Maule in 2016 was an almost optimal year if you picked before the rain. What began with worries about the lack of rainfall turned into a terrific quality fruit. On our parcels specifically improvements with control of mildew on the Carignan (Oidio) made for improvements which offset less rain falling which should have led to lower yields in the secano. If one manages parcel by parcel, culivating the soil properly, the rains of any given year do not have the heightened pendulum effect many asume they should.

 

Wine-making:

  • Ancestral farming by hand and horse
  • Naturally fermented with native yeasts
  • Open top fermenters. Caps were punched down by hand. Pressing manual.
  • Aged in barrels over two winters— barrels third use or more.
  • Yeasts native (we add Bagual Garnacha wine from previous vintage to a pie de cuba and then inoculate the can with its own native yeasts.)
  • No temp control (besides opening closing windows) open tank, no nada
  • Pinch of sulfites after Malolactic that normally finishes a full 6-7 months after harvest with next summer´s heat the following December or january

The 2016 Bagual Vineyard Garnacha Field Blend is floral, expressive and perhaps radically different, with notes I’ve never found in previous vintages. It was harvested very early, because ripening was very fast, and it has great tension on the palate (it has 7.17 grams of acidity!). The bunches of Garnacha here are very small, as Garnacha can be very variable. 2,584 bottles were filled in December 2017.

The Garage Wine Co. team doesn’t stop innovating; other than the new labels, I also previewed some unbottled Sémillon (with and without skins) from 2018. This Sémillon will be their second white, which they never really pictured before, after a blanc de noirs País!

Desde Bagual, en el secano del Maule, esta es una garnacha injertada sobre país que es tal salvaje como su entorno de lomajes, vegetación de sol y calores extremos. Es impresionante cómo las parras pueden vivir allí, solo con el agua que obtienen de la tierra y de la lluvia. Este es hijo del rigor, una garnacha profunda en madurez, con textura tremenda, tensa, se agarra a la lengua y no la suelta más. Es un vino grande para comida grande.

The 2015 Bagual Vineyard Garnacha Field Blend shows the heat of the vintage. I think these grapes from Caliboro tend to show quite ripe in warm years, and this is not an exception. It has the Caliboro firm tannins, and I feel this wine might benefit from some more time in bottle.

Bagual Vineyard Maule Valley Garnacha Field-blend 2014  – Lot # 59 – 92 Pts
The 2014 Bagual Vineyard Garnacha Field Blend uses fruit from Caliboro in Maule in partnership with the Solar family. The Carignan, Garnacha and Mataró field blend is near the banks of the Perquilauquen river, a river that, very unusual for Chile, flows from the Coastal Mountains east towards the Andes, passing through Caliboro, bringing granitic silt with it. East of Caliboro, it turns north and then west joining the Loncomilla and then the Maule river and on out to the Pacific. This is 14.9% alcohol with an incredible pH of 3.08 and 6.38 grams of acidity. As all the single vineyard bottlings, it matured in well-seasoned French oak barrels over two winters. It’s riper and headier, with a little more body from the Syrah. Very tasty and with a long, supple finish. None of these wines show any oak whatsoever. 2,222 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2015.

(Aged in neutral French oak barrels for two years; pH 3.27) Brilliant ruby-red. Potent, mineral-accented raspberry, cherry liqueur and potpourri aromas are complemented by a suave Asian spice note that builds in the glass. Seamless, penetrating and appealingly sweet, offering palate-staining red and blue fruit liqueur and floral pastille flavors and an exotic flourish of five-spice powder. Bagual Vineyard Maule Valley Garnacha Field-blend 2013  – Lot # 49 – 91 Pts
The 2013 Lot #49 Bagual Vineyard Garnacha Field Blend is composed of 11 barrels of Garnacha and one of Syrah. The grapes are harvested from the Bagual Vineyard in Caliboro, in the Maule, where they regrafted some old plants to Garnacha’ in 2013 they bottled a varietal Garnacha for the first time. Spicy, floral and subtle, it has a dark ruby color, darker than most Garnachas, a little earthy and organic. The palate is sinewy, with nice acidity and the fine tannins of the Garnacha, perfectly integrated oak and a very tasty finish. Some 3,800 bottles produced.
