This wine was grown by a small farmer in the Maule: Nivaldo Morales. It was farmed by hand and horse with traditional methods of dry-farming 70+ year old vines with vines of Garnacha and Mataró in the field-blend.
It was fermented naturally in small tanks with open-tops. Caps were punched down by hand and pressing was strictly manual. The wine was aged in barrels over two winters— barrels of three or more uses.
This wine is a tribute to the resilience of the ploughmen farmers of the Maule who have been stewards of the vines of Sauzal since colonial times. The 45th wine we have produced since 2001 it is thus labelled Lot # 45
T a l k i n g P o i n t s
- Sauzal the Coastal Range of mountains (much older and slower to cool than the Andes) thus sub-soils have cracked granite beneath that allow roots to get deep into cracks)
- Singular wine made from a small parcel with ancestral farming by hand and horse of the Secano Costero
- Naturally fermented with native yeasts in open top fermenters using punch-down
- Barrel-aged two winters in French Barrels (various cooperages, 2 + uses– no new wood)
- Vineyard part of GWCo’s Ploughmen Farmers Social Entrepreneurship Programme developed after the EarthQuake of 2010 and the winning of the Geoffrey Roberts Bursary.
Our Ploughmen Farmers 2013 (with green wax) sold in UK by Walker Wodehouse / Bibendum is the same wine from the same bottling.

“The nose is fresh and has tantalizing aromas of blueberries, violets, orange peel, raspberry leaf and aniseed with a touch of aromatic herbs that provide freshness. The palate is electric, with citric acidity, ultra-fine tannins and very good length. This is both rustic and elegant, wild and subtle. None of these wines show any alcohol or wood. This is a superb, fresh, Mediterranean blend that shows what the Maule is capable of.”
— Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate # 222
“Soft and velvety with hints of dark fruits and spices. Some walnut. Medium to full body, round tannins and a savory finish. Funky old vine wine.”

Wine Advocate – Robert Parker , #222 Dec 2015
I visited an amazing vineyard from a grower called Nivaldo Morales with Derek Mossman, an old vineyard planted mostly with País and some Carignan, and some País vines were regrafted to Garnacha, Mataró (Monastrell) and Garnacha (Grenache). The 2013 Lot #45 Carignan Garnacha Mataró Field Blend is sourced from that Sauzal vineyard in the Maule Valley. A very similar wine is also sold in the United Kingdom as The Ploughmen. The nose is fresh and has tantalizing aromas of blueberries, violets, orange peel, raspberry leaf and aniseed with a touch of aromatic herbs that provide freshness. The palate is electric, with citric acidity, ultra-fine tannins and very good length. This is both rustic and elegant, wild and subtle. None of these wines show any alcohol or wood. This is a superb, fresh, Mediterranean blend that shows what the Maule is capable of. Bravo! Around 4,000 bottles were produced. 94 pts Drink 2015 – 2021
Wine Advocate note about Garage Wine Co.
I sat down to taste through an exciting collection of wines with Derek Mossman. Garage Wine Co produces wines from Maipo and Maule, and their trademark is wines with great freshness and acidity from some seven vineyards they work. 42,000 bottles per year of highly personal and full of character wines. I later met with Mossman again to walk some of the vineyards for where he sources grapes for some of his Maule cuvées and the work he’s doing there to support the local ‘huasos’ and their vineyards is remarkable. The common thing that I’ve seen between Mossman, Cancino, Luyt, Parra and the other guys working in the south is respect — for the people, the traditions and the places. These are wines of respect. An exciting project to keep in mind.

Wine Advcate – Robert Parker , #213 Jun 2014
The 2011 Lot #34 Carignan from the Maule Valley is produced from the fruit of dry-farmed, head-pruned old vines. It is bright ruby-colored with a serious nose mixing tree bark aromas, red and black fruit, licorice and subtle spices. The Carignan is blended with some Grenache and Mataró. The palate is fluid with good acidity and medium body – pure, fresh, delicious Mediterranean wine. This is a great, elegant blend. 93 pts Drink now-2019
Wine Advocate note about Garage Wine Co.
The Garage Wine Co. literally began in Derek Mossman’s garage with just eight barrels and is his project together with his wife Pilar Miranda and a friend, Doctor Alvaro Pena. Mossman, a native Canadian, is one of the founding members of MOVI, the association of independent winegrowers. They source Cabernet from Maipo and Carignan from Maule. One of the most impressive new names in Chile. I tasted their wines on different occasions, which meant I did not manage to get a good overview of all of them together, so my notes might seem a bit erratic, but such were the circumstances. I should make sure to sit down and taste and discuss the whole line-up with Mossman next time ‘round, as I found the wines intellectually enriching and want to understand them better.

Bright ruby. Intense, spice-accented aromas of cherry, redcurrant and violet, with smoke and mineral topnotes. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering energetic red fruit flavors that take on weight with air. Finishes smoky, spicy and very long, with slow-building tannins and resonating florality. 91 Josh Raynolds – Steve Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar
