The 2013 Lot #50 Cabernet Franc has that note of freshness I find in some of the best high-altitude vineyards, with some blue fruit aromas, something minty, leafy, herbal, balsamic, very fresh and a little wild. This is a vineyard at some 700 meters altitude. The palate is also very fresh, medium-bodied with very fine tannins, a fine texture and is very elegant.” — Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate # 222

Lleno de aromas a hojas de tabaco, este es un vino rico en dulzor, pero a la vez fresco y tenso” — Descorchados – Patricio Tapia

“Incredible nose of crushed raspberries and flowers. Bay leaf too. Pureness of fruit here. Full body, round and silky tannins and a beautiful freshness and length. A fabulous wine. About 14 barrels made. Try to find it.”  — James Suckling

The 2013 Lot #50 Cabernet Franc is from the Pirque Vineyard in Maipo, and in this vintage the vineyard is shown on the label (well, it’s actually painted on the bottle!). It has that note of freshness I find in some of the best high-altitude vineyards, with some blue fruit aromas, something minty, leafy, herbal, balsamic, very fresh and a little wild. This is a vineyard at some 700 meters altitude. The palate is also very fresh, medium-bodied with very fine tannins, a fine texture and is very elegant. I tasted the 2009 for context and aging potential, and even when they used more oak at the time, the wine is aging very nicely, with some rusticity. 5,513 bottles were filled.   93 pts Drink 2015 – 2022

Wine Advocate note about Garage Wine Co.

I sat down to taste through an exciting collection of wines with Derek Mossman. Garage Wine Co produces wines from Maipo and Maule, and their trademark is wines with great freshness and acidity from some seven vineyards they work. 42,000 bottles per year of highly personal and full of character wines. I later met with Mossman again to walk some of the vineyards for where he sources grapes for some of his Maule cuvées and the work he’s doing there to support the local ‘huasos’ and their vineyards is remarkable. The common thing that I’ve seen between Mossman, Cancino, Luyt, Parra and the other guys working in the south is respect — for the people, the traditions and the places. These are wines of respect. An exciting project to keep in mind.

GWCo Lot # 36 Cab Franc – 2011

– 93 pts – Patricio Tapia

Garage Wine CO. Lot # 42 vintage 2012 Oak seems dominant when first opened but look beyond and you will see thick layers of ripse, voluptuous fruit behind. This is a generous Cab franc, yet very well balanced. 17,5 pts Drink 2015 – 2021 Alc 14%

Wine Advcate – Robert Parker , #213 Jun 2014

The 2011 Lot #36 Cabernet Franc is from a vineyard at 700 meters altitude in the Pirque region in the Alto Maipo, a place already well-known for Cabernet. This wine has a clean aroma of raspberry leaf and red fruits along with balsamic notes and great purity. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh, clean and pure, with a bitter note that lingers in your mouth. Drink now-2017. 92 pts (Best result for Cab Franc from Chile)

The Garage Wine Co. literally began in Derek Mossman’s garage with just eight barrels and is his project together with his wife Pilar Miranda and a friend, Alvaro Pena. Mossman, a native Canadian, is one of the founding members of MOVI, the association of independent winegrowers. They source Cabernet from Maipo and Carignan from Maule. The wines are vinified in 1,500 to 2,000-liter vats using native yeasts and are said to be bottled in recycled bottles. One of the most impressive new names in Chile. I should make sure to sit down and taste and discuss the whole line-up with Mossman next time ‘round, as I found the wines intellectually enriching and want to understand them better.

Wine Advocate – Robert Parker , #204 Dec 2012
The 2010 Lot 28 Cabernet Franc comes from 25+- year-old vines at 800 meters altitude and spends two winters in oak. It has a very convincing, fresh, expressive bouquet with pure brambly, briary black fruit and freshly tilled soil. The palate is medium- bodied with crisp black cherry and blueberry fruit on the entry. The tannins are fine and edgy, while the finish is beautifully composed and contains Margaux- like femininity. This is extremely well-crafted Cabernet Franc, surfeit with personality. Drink now-2017. 92 pts (Best Cab Franc from Chile)

2008 Garage Wine Co. Cabernet Franc #19 Maipo Valley
Bright ruby. Lively and precise on the nose, displaying ripe red fruit and floral scents and a slow-building herbal character. Sappy and expansive on the palate, offering juicy cherry, herb and floral pastille qualities. Shows very good intensity on the sweet, dark fruit-dominated finish, which clings tenaciously. This is drinking very well right now. 90     Josh Raynolds – Steve Tanzer Int’l Wine Cellar
