“There is good herbal freshness, ripe berries, earth, iron and a touch of blood. The tannins are very fine and there is a nice thread of acidity, with good balance. The 2009 tasted together with this shows classical notes of bottle evolution, layered with developed notes of cigar box, tobacco and graphite. Classical Chilean Cabernet.”

The 2013 Lot #51 Cabernet Sauvignon is blended with a little Cabernet Franc (15 to 16 barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon and one of Cabernet Franc), and is sourced from the San Juan de Pirque Vineyard. Most of the wines ferment in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts (some small lots are done in plastic bins) and then age in used barrels. There is good herbal freshness, ripe berries, earth, iron and a touch of blood. The tannins are very fine and there is a nice thread of acidity, with good balance. This vineyard is the second terrace of the Maipo river, with the classical rolling stones of Puente Alto, at almost 1,000 meters altitude. The bottles now show a round stamp saying ‘Mountain Grown’. The 2009 tasted together with this shows classical notes of bottle evolution, layered with developed notes of cigar box, tobacco and graphite. Classical Chilean Cabernet. 5,000 bottles produced. 92 pts Drink 2015 – 2021
Wine Advocate note about Garage Wine Co.
I sat down to taste through an exciting collection of wines with Derek Mossman. Garage Wine Co produces wines from Maipo and Maule, and their trademark is wines with great freshness and acidity from some seven vineyards they work. 42,000 bottles per year of highly personal and full of character wines. I later met with Mossman again to walk some of the vineyards for where he sources grapes for some of his Maule cuvées and the work he’s doing there to support the local ‘huasos’ and their vineyards is remarkable. The common thing that I’ve seen between Mossman, Cancino, Luyt, Parra and the other guys working in the south is respect — for the people, the traditions and the places. These are wines of respect. An exciting project to keep in mind.

GARAGE WINE CO CABERNET SAUVIGNON VALLE DE MAIPO LOT #44
Very pretty core of fruit here with blueberry, floral and stone character. Full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Fresh and clean. Drink now. 92 pts James Suckling .com
This small-lot Cab (350 cases) is classically Chilean at all check points. The nose is spicy and full of cassis and berry flavors along with tobacco, olive and mild eucalyptus notes. A bright, lively palate is bolstered by acidity, while plum and red-berry flavors are oaky, spicy and peppery, with a toasty, slightly rooty finish. Drink through 2020. 92 pts Wine Enthusiast – Michael Schachner (3/1/2015)

The 2012 Lot #44 Cabernet Sauvignon from Alto Maipo shows ripe aromas of wild berries, notes of tobacco leaf and some cracked peppercorns. The palate is medium-bodied with the signature fresh acidity I find as a constant in the Garage Wine Co. bottlings, and very fine, polished and refined tannins. This is serious, fresh Cabernet from Maipo. Around 4,000 bottles were produced. 91 pts Drink now-2019
Wine Advocate note about Garage Wine Co.
The Garage Wine Co. literally began in Derek Mossman’s garage with just eight barrels and is his project together with his wife Pilar Miranda and a friend, Doctor Alvaro Pena. Mossman, a native Canadian, is one of the founding members of MOVI, the association of independent winegrowers. They source Cabernet from Maipo and Carignan from Maule. One of the most impressive new names in Chile. I tasted their wines on different occasions, which meant I did not manage to get a good overview of all of them together, so my notes might seem a bit erratic, but such were the circumstances. I should make sure to sit down and taste and discuss the whole line-up with Mossman next time ‘round, as I found the wines intellectually enriching and want to understand them better.
92 pts – Patricio Tapia – Descorchados 2014
2011 Lot #37 – Vivid ruby. Sexy, highly perfumed bouquet of fresh red berries, cherry pit, potpourri and mocha, with hints of black pepper and anise adding complexity. Spicy and expansive in the mouth, offering lively cherry and raspberry flavors and intense floral character. Silky tannins add grip and shape to the long, sappy finish. This wine received no new oak. 92 pts Josh Raynolds – Steve Tanzer’s Int. Wine Cellar
2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Lot #3o Alto Maipo ($33) – Brilliant ruby. Smoke- and spice-accented cherry and cassis on the fragrant nose. Chewy, tightly focused dark fruit flavors flesh out and gain sweetness with air, picking up floral and bitter chocolate nuances along the way. Juicy and spicy on the youthfully tannic, very persisent finish, which features blackcurrant and candied licorice qualities. 91 – Josh Raynolds – Steve Tanzer Int’l Wine Cellar
