This wine was grown by ploughmen farmers in the Maule. It was farmed by hand and horse with traditional methods of dry-farming old vines with vines of Garnacha and Mataró in the field-blend.

It was fermented naturally in small tanks with open-tops. Caps were punched down by hand and pressing was strictly manual. The wine was aged in barrels over two winters— barrels of three or more uses.

This wine is a tribute to the resilience of the ploughmen farmers of the Maule who have been stewards of the vines of Caliboro since colonial times. The 46th wine we have produced since 2001 it is thus labelled Lot # 46

A little closed and serious, it slowly develops some aromas of paprika and beef blood, wild berries and something earthy. The palate is medium-bodied, with very fine acidity, fine tannins and very good length. This has very good harmony and stuffing to age in bottle.

The 2013 Bagel Vineyard Lot #46 is a blend of Cariñena, Garnacha and Mataró (Monastrell or Mourvèdre) from the Bagel Vineyard, located in Caliboro in the Maule Valley. It’s a vineyard that had old Cariñena and they regrafted some of the vines to Garnacha and Monastrell. They harvest and ferment the grapes separately from these alluvial soils from dry farmed, ungrafted vines (a constant in their wines). A little closed and serious, it slowly develops some aromas of paprika and beef blood, wild berries and something earthy. The palate is medium-bodied, with very fine acidity, fine tannins and very good length. Like all of heir wines, the wine spends two winters in the winery, as they believe it stabilizes and focuses the wines. This has very good harmony and stuffing to age in bottle. They produce a little more than 4,000 bottles of this wine. 91 pts Drink 2015 – 2021

I sat down to taste through an exciting collection of wines with Derek Mossman. Garage Wine Co produces wines from Maipo and Maule, and their trademark is wines with great freshness and acidity from some seven vineyards they work. 42,000 bottles per year of highly personal and full of character wines. I later met with Mossman again to walk some of the vineyards for where he sources grapes for some of his Maule cuvées and the work he’s doing there to support the local ‘huasos’ and their vineyards is remarkable. The common thing that I’ve seen between Mossman, Cancino, Luyt, Parra and the other guys working in the south is respect — for the people, the traditions and the places. These are wines of respect. An exciting project to keep in mind.

La primera cosecha sumó apenas dos barricas y la bebieron entre los amigos, algunos de ellos incluso compraron parte de esa producción. Hoy hacen unas 45 mil botellas de once vinos distintos, cada uno de parcelas definidas. De hecho, Mossman define Garage Wine Co. como una gestión que, desde su génesis, tuvo su foco en parcelas más que en cepas. “La gracia siempre fue separar las cosas y comparar. De ahí vienen los Lot” –dice Mossman. La filosofía de vinificación es simple. Más que vinos naturales, Mossman define a los suyos como “originarios”, inspirados en la sabiduría campesina, pero con aportes de conocimientos modernos de enología. El origen de sus parcelas o “Lot” comienza en Alto Maipo, pero después extendieron su interés a otras zonas, especialmente en el Maule, que es de donde viene gran parte de su catálogo. Se trata de carignanes de viejas parras en una zona muy cercana a la costa, sobre suelos graníticos. Este vino, como todos los tintos de Garage en la línea Lot y en Vigno, se cría por “dos inviernos” en barricas, las más nuevas de tres años de uso. “Cuando vas a comprar vinos por la zona, los viejos te dicen que el vino que lleva dos inviernos de crianza es el mejor” –dice Mossman. El resultado es el tinto clásico que se necesita para refrescar una tarde de asado con los amigos. Su acidez es intensa, pero también su lado terroso y su textura punzante.

The 2011 Lot #34 Carignan from the Maule Valley is produced from the fruit of dry-farmed, head-pruned old vines. It is bright ruby-colored with a serious nose mixing tree bark aromas, red and black fruit, licorice and subtle spices. The Carignan is blended with some Grenache and Mataró. The palate is fluid with good acidity and medium body – pure, fresh, delicious Mediterranean wine. This is a great, elegant blend. 93 pts Drink now-2019

The Garage Wine Co. literally began in Derek Mossman’s garage with just eight barrels and is his project together with his wife Pilar Miranda and a friend, Doctor Alvaro Pena. Mossman, a native Canadian, is one of the founding members of MOVI, the association of independent winegrowers. They source Cabernet from Maipo and Carignan from Maule. One of the most impressive new names in Chile. I tasted their wines on different occasions, which meant I did not manage to get a good overview of all of them together, so my notes might seem a bit erratic, but such were the circumstances. I should make sure to sit down and taste and discuss the whole line-up with Mossman next time ‘round, as I found the wines intellectually enriching and want to understand them better.

The 2010 Carignan (91%) – Grenache (9%) sports an intriguing nose of exotic spices, black plum, black cherry, underbrush, and earthy minerals. This is followed by a plush, succulent, pleasure-bent wine that is more structured than its peers. Give it 5-6 years to reveal its full potential and drink it from 2016 to 2025 92 pts Parker

The 2008 Lot #17 Old Vine Carignan – Same Sauzal Vineyard
Field Blend includes unknown amounts of Cabernet Franc and Malbec sourced from a 65-year-old parcel and aged in neutral oak. Purple in color with a captivating nose of exotic spices, incense, wild berries, and floral notes, in the glass it opens to reveal a complex, rich, layered wine packed into a medium- bodied frame. Give it 5-6 years to reveal its full potential and drink it from 2016 to 2023. 92 pts Parker
